Gravina in Puglia, Italy

The James Bond film NO TIME TO DIE was, amongst others, filmed in various locations in southern Italy, including Gravina in Puglia, a municipality in the province of Bari. This town is home to the Ponte Acquedotto Madonna della Stella, an 18th-century bridge that features prominently in the film. The bridge was built over a ravine (“gravina” is Italian for ravine), is 90 metres (300 feet) long and 37 metres (121 feet) high.

In the film, it appears as if the bridge is located in Matera (see Matera, Italy), a town about 30 kilometres (19 miles) south of Gravina in Puglia. While searching for suitable locations, director Cary Fukunaga visited the bridge in February 2019. In August of that year, part of the cemetery that James Bond (Daniel Craig) visits after crossing the bridge was built. Filming in Gravina in Puglia took place from 19 to 23 September.

The Ponte Acquedotto is first seen when James arrives in Matera with Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux). The bridge was digitally added.

The next day, James goes to the cemetery to visit the grave of his former lover, Vesper Lynd. The cables on the bridge were added for the film.

After being attacked at the cemetery, James runs back to the hotel across the bridge but is pursued from both sides by various vehicles. With nowhere to go, he uses the cables to jump off the bridge. The jump was performed by stuntman Dave Grant.

As the photos show, the bridge has been renovated and cleaned since filming was completed. It is also possible to access the lower part of the bridge through a staircase on the city side. It was remarkably quiet at the bridge during our visit. We saw almost no people, just a few Italian wall lizards.
