I have blogged before about Milford Sound, a fiord on New Zealand's South Island. This natural attraction in Fiordland National Park was featured in Willow as the fictional Lake of Fin Raziel and in a dream sequence at the beginning of Mission: Impossible - Fallout. Not surprisingly, the makers of ALIEN: COVENANT chose this beautiful landscape as the backdrop of an unknown planet.

Fur Seals, Milford Sound, 18 January 2020 |
The film is a sequel to 2012's Prometheus which in turn was a prequel to 1979's Alien. It is the fifth installment in the Alien series and the third directed by Ridley Scott. Filming began on 4 April 2016 in Milford Sound and ended on 19 July.
There are several shipping companies in Milford Sound that offer boat trips. These sail to the Tasman Sea and if you are lucky you may spot a whale. We unfortunately did not see whales, but we did see fur seals basking in the sun.
Led by captain Christopher Oram (Billy Crudup), a delegation from the spaceship Covenant arrives on the mysterious planet. Among the expedition members are the android Walter (Michael Fassbender) and head of the security unit Dan Lope (Demián Bichir). During our visit, the weather was considerably better than during filming. April in the southern hemisphere is similar to October in the northern hemisphere.
