In the eighteenth James Bond film,
TOMORROW NEVER DIES, media mogul Elliot Carver (Jonathan Pryce) tries to provoke a conflict between the United Kingdom and China. James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) is assigned to investigate what Carver is up to. Filming began on 1 April and ended on 5 September 1997 and locations included Germany, England, France, Thailand and Mexico.

In July production moved to Hamburg, the city where Elliot Carver launches his new satellite network. Cast and crew stayed at the Atlantic Kempinski and this hotel can also be seen in the film. The luxury hotel was opened on 2 May 1909, aiming at cruise ship passengers visiting the German city. On the right corner of the building are statues of two female figures carrying a globe. In the film, James Bond is staying in the underlying suite.
However, the scenes in the hotel room were filmed in England. The first time the exterior of the hotel is seen is at night. During our visit, around 10 o'clock in the evening, the lights were not on yet.

The following morning the harbour of Hamburg is seen briefly. This area is popular with tourists. Round trips by boat of one or two hours can be made here.

On the run for Carvers henchmen, James Bond crosses Mönckebergstraße where his BMV stands in front of St. Petri church. The City Hall of Hamburg can be seen in the background. The Hamburger Rathaus was built in late 19th century in Neo-Renaissance style and completed in 1897. The design was made by the Rathausbaumeisterbund, a group of architects led by Martin Haller. The tower is 112 metres (367 ft) high. It is possible to visit the building during a tour that is offered in several languages, see the
website of the city of Hamburg.

Back at the hotel James Bond enters the Holzdamm. The main entrance of the Atlantic Kempinski hotel is located in this street. It has one-way traffic, for the film the driving direction was temporarily reversed.

To escape Carver's pursuers, James Bond climbs on the balcony of his suite to the roof of the hotel. The stairs were made especially for the film and were removed after shooting was completed.

The pursuit continues by car and ends in a parking garage. These scenes were filmed in London, with the exception of the car that drives off the roof and ends up in a branch of car rental company AVIS. This is again Mönckebergstraße, not far from where the BMW was parked. The address where the car crashes into the shop window is actually a department store.
